A few months ago, I finished designing a book called Modern Mark Making by Lisa Engelbrecht. To say I'm honored to be a part of this project would be an understatement. I've taken a class from Lisa in the past and I've seen a lot of her work. She's extremely talented with lettering. She's also a wonderful teacher—generous, patient, kind and humble.
We first started this book with a cover that I later found out that neither one of us truly liked. Fortunately, through our contacts, we were able to convince the powers-that-be to change the cover to what it is now, a fuchsia mix of entangled letters. When working on the interior, I designed this book like no other book I've done before. Each page has several layers of Lisa's lettering, ink splotches and scratches. Each chapter encompasses a different style of lettering, with beautiful examples by Lisa and other talented artists, and instructions on how to accomplish the lettering. There are also steps on how to make marking tools out of everyday objects. And if you're intimidated by classic calligraphy (and believe me, I know how you feel) not to worry; this book goes way beyond that, with lettering such as Gothic, stitched, flourish, funky, scrawly, scripty and raw brush. This book is hardcover and spiral-bound, so it sits open easily.
If you're looking for inspiration, this is it! If you're looking for lettering how-tos, this is also it...you need to check it out!
