My CREATE Workshops
For the next few days, I’m going to introduce the workshops I’ll be teaching this May at CREATE in Irvine, CA. We start today with:
The Down-and-Dirty Paintless Journal (6-Hour)
Date: Wednesday, May 30
Using an old book as a base, we will construct our own “mash” journal. We will personalize our journals with spare bits of papers, overlapping to create a visual feast ready for fodder and doodles. We’ll discuss how to incorporate everyday items as embellishments for pages. Bring photocopies of family pictures (b&w) to make your book your own. We’ll focus on doodling, writing, and collage. No paint allowed in this class—just some down-and-dirty art journaling with scraps, pens, markers, and adhesives!
Students Should Bring: Scraps and bits of paper, some for collage and some large enough to serve as pages in your book (these don’t have to all be same size; we’ll be working in a 6 X 8 in. book, so think at least 12 in. wide, paper grocery bags, watercolor paper), glue stick or roller adhesive (such as Tombow Mono), gel medium, a couple of foam brushes for gel medium, masking tape, decorated tapes (if you have), pens you like for doodling (I use Microns), gel pens, Soufflé pens, a set of Crayola Washable Markers (Pip Squeaks are same thing), jar or cup for water, a basic art journaling kit: ruler, scissors, bone folder, exacto knife, awl, heat gun, spray inks such as Adirondack or Radiant Rains, if you have them.
I am SO looking forward to teaching this. We won’t be working with paints AT ALL in this class. We’ll use yummy scraps, embellishments, our writing, and doodling to fill our journals, with some fun techniques using washable markers thrown in!
And don’t forget to comment in the post below for a chance to win a signed copy of Doodle Sketchbook!
